- Which model? The Express or the SupraFAXModem 288? It makes a difference,
- the Express is a cheaper model and has some drawbacks.
-
- I own the 2nd model (retail about $200 on discount) and, in general, it's
- a fairly good modem for the price. It has flash ROM, Caller-ID support,
- informative LED display (speed and connect info), FAX (which I have not
- used), and has a nice small footprint (about 6" x 4.5").
-
- Support is adequate (if you don't try to explain about design flaws) and
- helpful enough with Internet access.
-
- The drawbacks are:
-
- No data switch to drop and reset the line (must be done by software or
- power cycle).
-
- A tendency to request a retrain when it shouldn't (during LAPM
- negotiation) unless one disables line monitoring and retrain request
- ability (that design flaw I mention, may be inherent with Rockwell
- chipset modems).
-
- Lower connect rates in comparison to higher-priced modems such as USR's
- Courier.
-
- Still worth the price if one is on a modest budget.
